Housing Supplement for Pensioners

Social Insurance Code (Socialförsäkringsbalken) Ch. 100–103

What does it mean?

Bostadstillägg is financial support for pensioners and people receiving sickness or activity compensation who struggle to cover housing costs. The supplement is administered by the Swedish Pensions Agency (Pensionsmyndigheten) and calculated based on housing costs, income, and any assets.

The supplement can cover up to 95% of housing costs, with a ceiling adjusted annually. For 2024, the maximum housing cost considered was SEK 7,500 per month for single persons. Assets above a certain exemption amount reduce the supplement. You apply through the Pensions Agency and must report all income, assets, and actual housing costs.

Key Points

  • Targeted at pensioners and people with sickness/activity compensation
  • Can cover up to 95% of housing costs
  • Administered by the Swedish Pensions Agency, not Försäkringskassan
  • Assets above the exemption threshold reduce the benefit
  • Application required — not paid automatically with the pension

Practical Tip

Many pensioners miss out on bostadstillägg. Check if you qualify using the Pensions Agency's calculation tool — even with a moderate pension, you may be eligible.
